RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INCLUSION IN A NEW AUTISM BILL

1.       Assessment of the child in the school environment immediately after diagnosis.

a.       Assessment by a Clinical Psychologist (observe behaviour in the class and playground)

b.       Assessment by an Occupational Therapist - Full sensory profiling

c.       Assessment by Speech and Language Therapist

2.       Make recommendations from specialists mandatory for the school to follow.

3.       Make it mandatory for the school to regularly communicate with the parents about the needs of the child with autism. (via questionnaires/ feedback forms).

4.       Regular auditing of the school to ensure they are carrying out recommendations to a minimum standard.

5.       All staff to be fulJy trained in autism in order to understand the needs of the child, the reasons for behaviour and how to manage behaviour.

6.       Reduced waiting times for initial assessment
